A Nigerian federal high court has fixed 20 November 2025 as the date for judgment in the terrorism case against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the movement Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Mr. Kanu faces a seven-count charge linked to his campaign for separatism in Nigeria’s south-east region. He has consistently refused to present a defense, challenging the court’s jurisdiction by claiming Nigeria lacks a valid terrorism law.
Justice James Omotosho declined the argument, saying Kanu had exhausted his six-day defense window and could not claim denial of a fair trial.
Kanu’s case traces back to his 2021 arrest and extradition from Kenya. His detention has reignited separatist sentiments among the Igbo population–drawing echoes of the 1967-70 secession attempt. The scheduled judgment date marks a critical moment both legally and politically, given the sensitivities surrounding regional identity, nationalism and state response.
