I, Sanusi Shuaibu Kowa, issue this statement in response to the recent visit by His Excellency, Governor Uba Sani, to Kurmin Wali, where he assured affected families, “We won’t abandon you.”
This statement is made from a place of concern.
The people of Kurmin Wali, like many communities across Kaduna State, deserve compassion, protection, and sustained government support. Such assurances are important. However, experience has taught many party loyalists and grassroots stakeholders that promises must be assessed not only by words, but by past actions.
This intervention is not intended to politicize insecurity or diminish the suffering of victims. Rather, it is a reminder that public confidence in leadership is built on consistency and trust. When leaders make commitments, citizens naturally reflect on whether similar promises in the past were fulfilled. For some of us within the ruling party, that reflection raises serious concerns.
On July 8, during a high-level consultative meeting involving the Governor and the Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly regarding the upcoming bye-election in Basawa Constituency, party stakeholders were urged to embrace consensus in the interest of unity. In that meeting, I was encouraged to step down from my political aspirations, with assurances that loyalty, sacrifice, and inclusion would be respected. In good faith, and out of commitment to party unity, I complied. I set aside personal ambition in favor of collective interest, trusting that the assurances given were sincere. Unfortunately, subsequent developments have left many loyal party members feeling sidelined and disengaged.
Beyond political participation, I made personal efforts to support my constituency, including the distribution of food items and other materials worth millions of naira. These actions were not undertaken for recognition, but as expressions of responsibility to the people and commitment to the party’s success. Today, meaningful access to leadership has become increasingly difficult. Communication channels that were once open are now closed, and those who were urged to make sacrifices struggle to be heard. This growing distance sends an unfortunate message to grassroots supporters who invested time, resources, and trust.
Many party loyalists were encouraged to submit their credentials through party structures, with the expectation that experience, competence, and dedication would be valued. Regrettably, this process has not translated into transparent inclusion, reinforcing perceptions of exclusion among committed stakeholders.
Governor Uba Sani has repeatedly affirmed his commitment to the safety and welfare of all citizens, including the safe return of abducted persons. These are promises the people of Kaduna State sincerely hope will be fulfilled. However, leadership credibility rests on consistency, and trust is sustained only when commitments, both public and internal are honored fairly and sincerely.
Power is temporary, but trust is enduring. The people of Kurmin Wali deserve lasting support, and party loyalists deserve honesty and inclusion.
Questioning the reliability of assurances is not an act of hostility, but a call for integrity.
If indeed no one will be abandoned, then that promise should extend to all citizens and loyal supporters who believed, sacrificed, and stood firm.
